Winter Fly Fishing Western Maryland
The MD DNR stocks the reservoir with Rainbows and this may be a stocker that swam upstream and made its home in the bridge pool.
I did some Winter Fly Fishing in western Maryland over the weekend, the Savage was running high so I decided to fish some new water. With over 100 miles of Brook Trout streams in the Savage River watershed, as well as a beautiful strain of wild Brook Trout, it is one of the few intact Brook Trout systems in the country. There is a zero creel limit on Brook Trout so as to ensure good populations of fish. I decided to fish Crabtree Creek, it feeds the western arm of the Savage reservoir, it is a good size stream with Brookies in the 12″ class. The nicest fish was a Rainbow, it looked very healthy and wild but whether it is wild or stocked is not clear to me. Beautiful winter day fly fishing Crabtree Creek in western Maryland!
